Finally got around to watching Ti West’s followup to House of the Devil. I liked House mostly for it’s marketing and eighties aesthetic — it truly had one of the greatest posters I’ve ever seen. That said, the movie literally had two first acts. Thirty minutes of getting her to the house and thirty minutes of her wandering around said house. That’s sixty minutes of introductory business, which isn’t for me.
Innkeepers is kinda the same in that there’s not a “true” scare until the sixty minute mark (which I don’t really even count because that was a dream sequence) and not much happens for the first hour but I still liked it quite a bit. West’s direction is remarkably controlled, using a lot of slow movement and steadicam glides, and really creates that perfect tone of building dread. The score is great. The setting is fantastic. And Sara Paxton is very easy to watch for an hour and a half.
Thought this was a remarkable step up from House and if West can start putting in some damn scares before the sixty minute mark he might become one of my new favorite directors.
And the posters for this truly are incredible.
